FLY 3D — A Masterclass Film at BISFF 2026

The screening

FLY 3D is a stereoscopic short film made by students during Alaric Hamacher’s 3D Master Class at the Busan International Short Film Festival (BISFF) in 2026. It was first screened at the Busan Cinema Center during BISFF. It was subsequently selected for the 3D section of the French Courant3D Festival, outside the competition.

The screening took place in the cinema environment of the Busan Cinema Center. The BISFF program guide and the New Media Cinema Workshop were presented on the large cinema screen, placing the students’ work in the same public space as the festival’s other film programmes.

NoteFestival context

This New Media Cinema Workshop is a practical production course. During the 3D Master Class, students learn the principles of stereoscopy, shoot a short film with a 3D camera, edit the left and right views, and prepare the finished work for 3D cinema and Apple Vision Pro. The completed workshop films are screened at the Busan Cinema Center.

The film-making process

The film was made by students from Dongseo University, with participants specializing in filmmaking, graphic design, and animation. The group developed the work during the masterclass, moving from the initial idea to stereoscopic production, editing, and a festival screening within the workshop schedule.

The production photographs and video reveal the working atmosphere behind the film: students, cameras, and the practical decisions that shaped the stereoscopic image.

ImportantProduction tools
  • Camera: Sony NEX3D
  • Editing: DaVinci Resolve
  • 3D monitoring: an UltraMonitor connected to a projector for live 3D editing
  • Stereoscopic viewing: DLP-Link shutter glasses were used to see the live 3D effect and colour-grade in 3D
  • Theatrical delivery: the finished film was created as a stereoscopic 3D DCP for cinema projection
  • Academic setting: Dongseo University student team working during the BISFF masterclass
  • Support: Blackmagic Design Asia

The live 3D monitoring arrangement was central to the workshop. The students could inspect the stereoscopic result while editing rather than treating the 3D version as a final conversion made after the creative decisions were finished. The masterclass was supported, as in previous years, by Blackmagic Design Asia, with DaVinci Resolve used as the editing environment.

Editing and live 3D monitoring

The edit was performed in DaVinci Resolve. An UltraMonitor was connected to a projector so the students could review the stereoscopic result during the edit, with the timeline, source material, and projected image visible as one working setup.

DLP-Link shutter glasses allowed the team to see the live stereoscopic effect and colour-grade while viewing the image in 3D.

The masterclass and its curriculum

The masterclass was led by Alaric Hamacher, stereographer, director, producer, and programmer at BISFF. Its curriculum combined the principles of stereoscopy with practical production: understanding the stereo image, working with a 3D camera, planning a short film, shooting, editing, monitoring the result, and preparing the finished work for exhibition or screening.

The curriculum begins with the basic principles of stereoscopy and 3D-film screening. It then moves directly into production: the students plan the images, shoot with the Sony NEX3D, evaluate the stereo result on the live projection system, edit in DaVinci Resolve, and finish a film for an audience. The final stage was the creation of a stereoscopic 3D DCP, the cinema-delivery format used to project the finished film in the theater. FLY 3D is therefore not simply a camera test. It is the result of a shared curriculum in which creative, technical, and editorial decisions meet.
