Preface

This book brings together the practical workflows, technical explanations, research notes, and production experience published through the Spatial Media project. It is written for filmmakers, students, researchers, artists, and technicians who want to understand how spatial images are captured, processed, displayed, and experienced.

The subjects overlap by design. Stereoscopic cinema establishes many of the principles used in VR180. Digital holography and light-field displays extend the same questions from two views to many viewpoints or continuous optical fields. The concept appendix connects recurring terminology across those different production and research contexts.

Reading the book

The chapters are arranged in four main parts:

  1. Stereoscopic 3D introduces depth geometry, practical camera systems, legacy MVC recovery, editing, and stereoscopic subtitles.
  2. VR180 and Immersive Video covers contemporary cameras and distribution workflows for headset presentation.
  3. Digital Holography and Light Fields examines holographic capture, projection illusions, stereoscopic evaluation, quilts, and lenticular displays.
  4. Events and Archives documents festivals, workshops, screenings, and communities that support spatial-media practice.
